The Artist and His Frame of Reference
I was born in New Haven, CT. My father was a doctor there and at Yale New Haven Hospital. My mother was an educator and administrator in public schools in Connecticut and later in New York City. She's now an artist also. With several professional artists in the family, I was encouraged to be an artist in my youth and received extra education at home. I explore the disciplines of visual art, photography, graphic design, film and dance. At twelve I take classes at
The Art Students League of New York.
My college studies focused on the arts, liberal arts and humanities. At the young age of fifteen I went to Simon's Rock Early College at Bard University where my visual arts training included focus on drawing, painting, color theory and printmaking. I then brought my art portfolio to an interview with New York University where I was accepted at sixteen years old as a sophomore.
At that time however I chose to accept a Ford Foundation grant and full scholarship to study dance at Lincoln Center and soon performed there - as well as at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.
Still very young, at twenty, I return to my visual art studies. First at The Fashion Institute of Technology receiving a SUNY Educational Foundation grant and award, and graduating Summa Cum Laude. After which I continued at The School of Visual Arts and also NYU (again). These visual art studies included painting, drawing, graphic design, photography, digital/computer design, art history, typographic design and film-making. I was then recruited/employed as an art director and creative director in advertising at numerous advertising and design agencies while still pursuing my own vision and art projects as I could afford to.
In the early 1990's, I'm able to devote four or five days a week to my painting. Soon after with the greatly appreciated support from collectors, patrons, comrades and allies in the arts, I accomplish enough independence and knowledge, both practically and philosophically, to give all my focus and energy to my work as a painter.
My art work is now in numerous private collections. The diverse experiences I've had in the arts and on my artistic journey have enhanced my work. My techniques as a painter are a hybrid of many factors; My own experimentation and invention, also my academic and autodidactic experiences. All contribute to my creativity as a visual artist; a designer, a showman and most importantly as a painter.
